So the time has come for us to replace some of our carabiners. We decided to stock up on Petzl Attache HMS carabiners, by far one of the most popular locking carabiners.
The ones we got from AllSports Equipment has an anodized mango orange color. Pretty unique. These HMS/pear-shaped lockers have a wider contact surface for better rope glide, making it ideal for belay stations.
Perfect for Multi-pitches
I used to think that an auto lock / twist lock carabiners are the most easiest to use, as I can be a rather forgetful person when it comes to locking the carabiner. Well, it does come in handy when you’re doing a single-pitch or top rope belay. However, not so for multi-pitches. There are just some situations when you need to unlock the carabiner single-handedly, especially when the other hand is on the braking rope and you have to do a munter. The pear shape is important because you can use the Attache to belay using a munter hitch, something that is next to impossible on a small D-shaped locker. I’ve experienced the trouble once and vowed to myself that I am forever a screwgate locking carabiner fan for life.
But I digress. Let’s get back to the Attache. What’s great about this is that it has a visual indicator. The gate of the carabiner has a red band indicator to show when the biner is unlocked, providing a quick visual safety check. Handy for forgetful person like myself.
For top-rope anchors, or for casual cragging, larger round-stock carabiners are a better choice as they are more durable. But for multi-pitch climbing where space and weight are more important, the Attache is a good choice.
